Travel Nurse Tips

California is a high-demand state for travel CNAs but has a strict equivalency process. You must complete a California-specific Live Scan fingerprinting session or mail in cards, which often causes the longest delay. Plan for at least a two-month lead time before your contract start date.

Reciprocity (Equivalency) requires form CDPH 283E. Out-of-state CNAs must be active and in good standing. Fingerprinting via California Live Scan or FD-258 cards is required. Proof of work in the last 2 years is required unless initially certified within the last 2 years.

Processing Time Notes

Allow up to 30 days for initial application review; total time including background clearance is typically 60 days.

Continuing Education

48 hours required every 2 years

48 hours of in-service training/CEUs required per 2-year renewal period, with a minimum of 12 hours in each year.

Additional Information

Fees for Live Scan (typically $32-$70) are paid to the vendor, not CDPH.
